The Reason for IPL & Peel Season

You may have heard our providers speak about different “seasons” when it comes to our aesthetic treatments, and there are important reasons behind this! During the summer when the weather is warm and inviting, we tend to spend more time outdoors in direct sunlight. While we already know that this type of exposure can be harmful (thank you, sunscreen!) it can also cause adverse side effects when receiving specific treatments.

IPL photofacials successfully treat hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, rosacea, discolored skin, broken capillaries, and sun damage. However, if you are exposing yourself to direct sunlight for an extended period of time prior to receiving an IPL treatment, you run the risk of burning or blistering your skin. Our providers recommend keeping the treated area away from direct sun exposure for 4-6 weeks prior to this treatment. Not only does this ensure a more successful outcome, it prevents any possible damage to your skin after the laser procedure.

Chemical peels fall into this same category! Chemical peels, or facial peels, are an accelerated form of exfoliation that is induced by a chemical agent. When applied to the skin, it removes the damaged outer layers to help lighten, tighten, and brighten the skin while enhancing a smooth texture. However, staying out of the sun 2-4 weeks prior to this type of appointment ensures that your skin won’t experience unnecessary burns or additional hyperpigmentation.

So, the reason behind this season? Less sun exposure! We have more of an opportunity to take advantage of these transformative treatments during the fall and winter months. It’s also important to note that after both of these treatments, we recommend staying away from direct sun exposure for 4 weeks with continuous moisturizing and a medical grade SPF!

Please give us a call at 512-668-9090 if you would like to discuss any of these treatments with our providers.
