In-Office Liposuction may be right for you if:
- You’re bothered (unhappy, self-conscious, embarrassed) by fat under the chin, also known as submental fullness
- You feel the condition makes you look older or heavier than you actually are
- You don’t want to have surgery
- You eat well and exercise, but submental fullness does not go away
How Does It Work?
Chin liposuction works by inserting a small tube, called a cannula, into the chin in different areas. Using gentle suction, small and strategic amounts of fat are removed from each location. The result is a smoother, more even profile with a reduced amount of fat under the chin. This procedure can often be done in the office under local anesthesia but a consultation is needed to determine which anesthesia method will be best.
The submental liposuction procedure is a fairly straightforward one. The surgery is minimally invasive and usually requires no more than 3 or 4 tiny incisions in the patient’s chin area. Using these incisions, the plastic surgeon is then able to refine and sculpt the patient’s chin and neck.
In the vast majority of cases, the submental liposuction procedure can be carried out while the patient is wide awake. This is done through the use of local anesthesia. Of course, if the patient is combining the submental liposuction procedure with another more intensive one (such as a blepharoplasty), IV sedation would be recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions...
In many instances, the results of a chin liposuction procedure may last seven to 10 years. However, the aging process affects each person differently, and as a person gets older, the results of chin liposuction may gradually disappear.
Pain associated with chin lipo is usually minimal. Dr. Rochlin uses local anesthesia for the procedure itself to sedate the patient. But the chin and neck are sensitive areas.
Chin or Neck Liposuction is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced, competent Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.
Liposuction of the chin and neck is easily done with local anesthesia only. General anesthesia is not indicated. Anxious patients can be given a bit of oral sedation prior to the procedure.
When you're thin, just a small amount of fat under your jaw -- called submental fat -- may feel like it's too much for your profile. Most of the time it's just a result of genetics, and someone in your family tree passed on the tendency to have a little more flesh or fat in the chin area.
In most cases, the submental liposuction surgery can be completed in around an hour. Patients will be able to go home shortly after the procedure has been completed. Though each patient is different, most will have completely recovered from the procedure within around 3-5 days.
In order to ease your recovery process, you should keep your head elevated, take painkillers as advised by your doctor, and ice the impacted area as directed. Though these first few days can be tough, it will be worth it when you see the final results.
Your doctor may ask that you only perform mild exercises for one to two weeks after your treatment. Heavy exercise and other strenuous activities should be avoided for roughly two weeks after receiving liposuction. After about two days, you will start to notice changes to your face.
Some patients may feel fine after chin liposuction and return to their normal activities the next day. Almost all chin liposuction patients return in three days, after the swelling goes away, and many of them make a full recovery after one week.
In addition to a healthy diet, here's what you should focus on getting plenty of after liposuction. Healthy sources of protein include:
- Lean meat such as chicken breast.
- Beans and legumes.
- Nuts and seeds.
- Whole grains.
- Leafy green vegetables.
- Red meat in moderation.
- Protein supplements, such as protein powder for shakes.
