Babies and Botox – What are the options?

Exciting news, you are considering getting pregnant, are currently expecting or have your new little bundle of joy and are nursing. Congratulations on all accounts! Now the question - Have you have gotten used to minimizing those pesky wrinkles and fine lines with Botox or Dysport? Now what?

Botox is a brand name, just like Dysport is. Both products are a form of neurotoxin used cosmetically to smooth away facial wrinkles and fine lines. For most of us, we have created a space in our lives for this powerful anti-aging tool and generally do not give it much thought. Hang on though, pregnancy and nursing may cause you to think twice. So, what does the research tell us. There is just not a lot of research about the use of Botulinum toxin in pregnant people. Some research shows that neurotoxins injected into pregnant animals showed no evidence of the toxin crossing into the placenta. That is animals though, not humans. A 2017 review of cosmetic procedure during pregnancy notes no controlled clinical trials have examined the effects of botulinum toxin in pregnant women. Thus, more research is needed. For MiraBelle, we err on the side of caution and do not inject neurotoxins for clients who are pregnant or nursing.

So, what are the options then to help with anti-aging while you are pregnant or nursing. There are several, so don’t give up.

Chemical peels:

Glycolic and lactic acid peels are safe during pregnancy or while nursing. A glycolic peel can help with fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin tone and luster, adding even a little more to your Baby Glow! Lactic acid peels are a bit more mild than glycolic peels and can leave a smoother and brighter skin as well as help with hydration.

This three-step mechanical facial which cleanses, extracts and hydrates the skin in a patented process has not been significantly studied with pregnant and nursing women. At MiraBelle when we choose to perform a HydraFacial we would eliminate any higher strength glycols, booster treatments or LED light treatments. This can be the perfect option to help maintain a healthy skin balance during these months.

Skincare Products:

Medical grade skin care is also a must during pregnancy and for nursing months. There are many products that are completely safe and some that are even more sought after than others. Revision Skincare Revox 7 or Revox Line Eraser are great alternatives to not getting Botox or Dysport. These products contain peptides, hyaluronic acid and Arnica to aid in reducing fine lines and wrinkles and are pregnancy safe.

So, while you enjoy one of the most exciting times in your life, know that there are options and alternatives to your quarterly Botox or Dysport. Spend a moment and speak with your physician if you have questions about what your options are. The Experts in Aesthetics at MiraBelle Spa are happy to answer your questions too.
